Salt Spring Island's Fitness Centre, Celebrating Our 20th Anniversary.
Why does it take you so long to unplug a sink? Big inconvenience for members! Do you care about your customers Peter? Do you want us to remain customers?
Let’s review. I found out that the sink in the men’s changeroom was plugged on Sunday evening. I spent an hour trying to unclog it with Liquid Plumber, then a plunger, then took off the pipe underneath the sink. Nothing worked. I called the plumber on Sunday evening. He called back Monday morning, and got to it as soon as he could, which was Monday afternoon. That means the sink was plugged for less than 24 hours, including a Sunday.
So. How long does it take to unplug a sink? Nineteen hours, twelve of which the gym was closed. That’s about as quick as humanly possible. When I attain superhuman status, I promise to do better.
Some kettlebells would be great!
Everything old is new again! These are the weights they used in the late 1800’s! We thought we would update ours to dumbbells.
Great staff, Great location, Awesome gym!
Kara
I wish the folks at the front desk would do a walkabout to see if people are using machines and weights properly. I would welcome any advice.
The folk at the front DO go around on a regular basis, and if they see some blatant indiscretion, they will say something. If you are looking for more exercises to add to your routine, simply ask whoever is at the front counter and they will be happy to spice up your workout!
Raw Sugar (anything but white) option for coffee?
The coffee is complimentary, as is the cream and the (white) sugar. Anything else is BYOOS (bring your own organic sugar) (or Splenda).
The sauna is way too expensive for your members
Odd. The last time I checked out the other places on Salt Spring or indeed in Victoria or Vancouver, we are waaaay cheaper – and, we have a beautiful private, quiet room with private shower. I think it is a great value – oh, did I mention we haven’t raised our rates on the sauna in three years – in fact, we actually LOWERED them! Well, you can’t please everyone, can you?
Thank you, thank you! For extending the weekend hours to 5:00 pm.
It’s worked out great for everyone!
Cardio room too crowded. Please get rid of a few bikes and the large stairs. They are never all used at once.
This is mutinous talk. There would be a general riot if I got rid of ANY of the cardio equipment. Everybody has a favourite piece of equipment. If our worse problem is too much equipment, that’s a problem I’ll live with any day . . . its not like, say, a blocked sink.
Staff should be trained to clean tanning beds after clients have used them. Beds that haven’t been cleaned properly can be a serious health hazard.
The way that the gym is set up with the beds quite far from the front reception desk, it is a difficult task for the trainers to clean the beds – especially the one at the far end of the hallway. We have signs that advise people to clean the bed before using it. We have signs that ask people to clean thoroughly after they have used it. But the key word in the first sentence is “gym.” We are a fitness centre that offers sunbeds, not the other way around. Our staff’s priority is with the members’ fitness requirements.
Squat rack/cage in the back room.
The back room is really a ‘quiet’ stretching room/day care with a few small machines in there. Its hard enough as it is in that room to get a decent area to really stretch, so I am afraid a giant squat rack is out of the question.
Please, new flooring in the ‘stinky’ carpet room. Thanks
The carpets are professionally cleaned once a year and cleaned by us about three times a year. We have to have carpet in there because we are over a health food store and the floors are far from soundproof. The carpet (and the cleaning materials) have a built-in bactericide. We do the best we can under the circumstances.
How about getting a reliable sound system? Regularly, we’ve had to do without music during a fitness class. Music is key to keeping the momentum of the class going.
The sound system is reliable and quite simple to use. The problem usually occurs when a member goes in and uses it with his/her MP3 player or other input, or tries to use our cd player and doesn’t quite know how to do it, and starts pushing buttons randomly. Then the aerobics instructor goes in and can’t get the system back to normal, usually because he/she is not in the room enough to become familiar with the system. So I either put the system under some sort of lock and key (which isn’t fair to our members) or educate the instructors and live with the very few times that the instructor is flabbergasted.
